Ben Wright Smith has spent the last year writing, recording, and playing shows with acts such Ash Grunwald, D.D. DUMBO, Holy Holy, Rat & Co and Bertie Blackman while releasing music from his upcoming 7” ‘In Parallel’
The first single, If Living The Good Life Is Easy (Why Is This So Hard?), released late last year, was co-produced with fellow Melbournian Oscar Dawson (HOLY HOLY, Ali Barter) mixed and Mastered by Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker) and come packaged with a visually stunning music video shot on location in beautiful Blairgowrie, Victoria by Charlie Ford & Josh McKie (Vance Joy and Courtney Barnett). His first official release garnished an exciting response including features on Tonedeaf, Mess and Noise & Speaker TV.
The second single, ‘Fictional’ was received with equal enthusiasm being praised for its 1960’s country aesthetic while being paired with a perversely flowery clip filled with avant-garde imagery and a pseudo 90’s high art composition. ‘Fictional’ received local and nationwide radio play and was also added to the feature play list on Triple J Unearthed.
The release of Ben’s first EP ‘In Parallel’ garnished glowing acclaim at home and abroad. It was premiered by American songwriter and received glowing praise from Relix, Nashville Scene and Nylon Magazine who described the EP as ‘…everything you need from feel good rock choruses to stripped down acoustic ballads–we’re big fans of what he’s doing’.
While working on his new album Ben has been busy writing music for a menagerie of Australian artists and producers such as M-Phases, Asta, Chance Waters, Rai Thistlethwaite & Mind Over Matter. Ben’s new album was recorded in Nashville with celebrated Australian ex-pat producer Mark Moffatt (The Saints, The Divinyls, Neil & Tim Finn) as is expected to be released in 2015.
