Shining Bird is an experimental pop band from the coastal town of Austinmer, NSW Australia.
Originally formed as a studio project in 2012, they released the Shade of the Sea EP, followed by their debut album ‘Leisure Coast’ on Spunk Records in 2013. The album received widespread acclaim for its unique brand of Australiana-infused dream pop. On the back of strong reviews from publications such as Rolling Stone, Russh and the Sydney Morning Herald, as well as earning Album of the Week on ABC’s Radio National, ‘Leisure Coast’ helped propel Shining Bird towards a new bunch of listeners.
Spunk launched the signing of the band with a clip to first single ‘Distant Dreaming’ that has been watched over 300,000 times on YouTube and was named Rage TV’s ‘Indie clip of the Week’.
Sydney’s FBi Radio listed ‘Distant Dreaming’ the third most played track of 2013.
After touring extensively in their own right, Shining Bird has played alongside acts such as Kurt Vile, Franz Ferdinand, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Drones, Father John Misty, and appeared at numerous festivals including Fairgrounds, Secret Garden, Sydney Festival, Melbourne Music Week and Newtown Festival. The band’s live shows earned them a finalist nomination for ‘Best Live Act’ in FBi’s Sydney Music, Art & Culture Awards in 2014.
For the past year the band have been making regular trips to the Blue Mountains of NSW to write and record new material. Trekking to remote lookouts and watching classic Australian films fueled the creative process. After much anticipation by fans, the band emerged with ‘Rivermouth’, a track steeped in Australian bush and coastal imagery, that reflects a maturity of songwriting and production. The track is filled with layers of detail that offer a different journey on every listen.
Spunk/Caroline released ‘Rivermouth’ digitally as a single in September 2015 with artwork by Paul Ryan, who also painted the cover of Leisure Coast. This time round, Paul produced a work in the same style as his recent Archibald Prize nominated entry. Since its release ‘Rivermouth’ has been named best new music on Double J, and Vmusic, & achieved high rotation on radio stations FBi, and Double J. The filmclip, which features a man ‘skiing on snakes’ was named ‘Clip of the week’ on Rage. The single also won the highly regarded ‘Song of the Year’ award at the FBi radio SMAC awards presented by APRA Amcos.
Shining Bird is now gearing up to take their music further both sonically and geographically. The latest single ‘Helluva Lot’, proceeds the bands second full length album ‘Black Opal’ which is set to be released on October 7th via Spunk Records.
